Five Islands - Long-tail Boat Tour
Kohsamui
Island Tours
After enjoying various tours around the Samui archipelago we have to say this is one is quite special for a variety of reasons.
The Five Islands are locally known as 'Four Islands-Five Islands' as the largest of the islands sits behind a smaller one when viewed from the shores of Taling Ngam Beach.
The only inhabitants of these beautifully rugged islands are the Sea Gypsy guards, who have zero tolerance for intruders or uninvited guests. Why you might ask? The poaching of the Swiftlet swallow bird's nests.
The islands are home to thousands of these birds that build their nests in caves, and on the jagged rock face of the islands. The bird's nests are considered to have considerable nutrional benefits and are a delicacy in high-end Hong Kong restaurants when served as a soup. Rare commodities fetch high prices, hence the tight security surrounding the islands.
The nests are harvested by licensed gathers who risk their lives scaling the steep and rugged cliff faces of the islands to reach the nests.
Outsiders have been traditionally forbidden to set foot on these islands for the above reasons, but thanks to the commitment and trust of Colin Burgess and his team at The Five Islands Restaurant it is now possible.
Samui Visitors can now enjoy a private long-tail boat tour of the Five Islands. The traditional long-tail boat has been specially designed for comfort. It has sofa style bench seating for 6 people and sunbeds on the foredeck.
You will see caves; beaches and bamboo dwellings perched precariously on limestone cliffs and pinnacles.
During the tour you can enjoy chilled drinks, a swim, snorkel and feeding of tropical fish.
The tour does evoke a sense of awe and beauty to take with you on your short voyage back to a delicious lunch or sunset dinner at The Five Islands Restaurant. After a refreshing shower you will be served cocktails on the beach before your meal.
There are two private boat tours - one in the morning and one in the afternoon - please review the details here before making a booking.
